This article falls outside of the main scope of this blog, I will however develop the link to trading at a later stage.
Rant
The war in Ukraine highlights how useless politicians are when facing a real threat. The sanctions imposed by both EU and US are not even a bad joke. It’s an insult. An insult that is being sold as “the biggest sanctions package ever”. No high-impact sanctions like the SWIFT ban are imposed, because we want to have options in case of “further escalation”. Putin laughs in Brussel’s face and he has won this round. He invaded a sovereign country and all EU is capable of doing, is discussing potential sanctions, without imposing the painful ones to leave some stuff for later. And Germany sent 5000 helms to Ukraine. *standing ovations*
I’m annoyed and angry at what EU has become. It’s a bunch of overpaid bureaucrats, discussing options in their cozy offices, while hundreds are dying and the whole world is watching everything like a TV show. It does not matter if you hold a weapon and shoot or wave a pen doing nothing, both actions are killing innocent people.
There was a report on German public TV (ARD) speaking to people trying to help in Ukraine. Psychologists and reporters were trying to help children process what is going on, close to the front lines. Kids they worked with begged them to take them away from there (which they did). Imagine the fear driving a child & parents, to separate the family and leave home with total strangers. It’s pure survival instinct and very primal fear. It’s literally unimaginable.
History tends to repeat. Our inaction now may cost us a lot more later. I hope to be wrong on this one, however what would be the rationale for Putin to stop at Ukraine? Why not “re-unite” the whole ex-Soviet block? What prevents him? Does he fear sanctions? Which sanctions?! The cautious intelligence reports state that most of the military personnel is actually still outside of Ukraine. Why are they waiting or what are they waiting for? Sure, they might not want a bloodbath as it would hurt their power in Russia, too, but they have it already. Tanks crushing people in cars, shooting at hospitals, explosions in Kindergartens. These maybe single acts of mentally ill soldiers but they are there and the more we see it, the more “normal” it becomes and the more will come as a result.
This crisis is far from over and the way EU reacts is unfortunately not surprising at all. What is surprising, is that not many speak about the consequences and the cost of this ignorant waiting game our incompetent “leadership” is playing, trying to dodge any responsibility in case things go south. You might soon see how a bad scenario plays out and experience it on your own skin.
Rant end.
